Chicago Gourmet 2013 Preview

September 25 2013 - 9:00 AM

Chicago Gourmet, presented by Bon Appetit and the Illinois Restaurant Association, is gearing up for an unbelievable weekend. The sixth annual event takes place in Millennium Park this Saturday and Sunday September 28-29 and features the best of Chicago’s culinary scene with two days of food, drinks, chef demos, book signings, seminars, and more! If there’s one foodie event to attend each year, it has to be Chicago Gourmet.

What’s in store for attendees this year? Expect appearances by Gale Gand, Graham Elliot, Tony Mantuano, Homaru Cantu, and more than 175 chefs.  Last year’s event featured Art Smith and Takashi Yagihashi (pictured above). There will be 11 tasting pavilions with a range of foods prepared and presented by chefs, as well as a series of smackdown chef competitions where two chefs will prepare a dish from a variety of ingredient categories. I’m personally most excited to visit the Dessert Pavilion (yes, there’s a pavilion devoted to delicious sweet treats!) with bites from Firecakes, Black Dog Gelato, Terry’s Toffee, Floriole, and many more.

Aside from the two-day main event, there are other events that make up the gourmet weekend. The Grand Cru event includes the opportunity to try fine wines on top of the Harris Theater rooftop among  group of Master Sommeliers. Paired with the wines are a selection of culinary tastings from 10 chefs, five of whom carry Michelin stars.  The fourth-annual Hamburger Hop competition, held on Friday, will feature a selection of Chicago chefs who prepare juicy burgers for attendees.  A panel of celebrity chefs judge the entries. Finally, Late Night Gourmet is a new event this year which acts as the after-party following Hamburger Hop on Friday. The event includes even more food, drinks, and music at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, and chefs Graham Elliot and Ryan Poli are expected to stop by.

Tickets are still available at www.chicagogourmet.org for many events, except for Saturday one-day tickets, weekend passes and The Hamburger Hop.

Are you attending Chicago Gourmet this year? If so, what event/chef/food/drink are you most looking forward to?
