5 Things We're Reading & Eating

December 07 2012 - 6:08 PM

Here at Chicago Foodies, we like to focus on what’s local, seasonal and timely. So, we’re kicking off a new series to share with you the blogs, articles and recipes we’re reading each week. If you have a suggestion for this feature, send an email to marly[@]chicagofoodies[dot]com, and let us know what you’d like to share with us. Here’s a little taste of what we’ve been digging into post-Thanksgiving.

  1. Brown Butter Ginger Cookies with Mascarpone Cream
What better way to start your pre-holiday diet than to bake some cookies? These aren’t just any cookies, and Not Without Salt isn’t just any food blog. These cookies look perfectly crunchy from the sugar on the outside and soft on the inside. These adorable sandwich cookies scream Christmas and look like the perfect spicy winter treat.
  2. The Everygirl: 5 Top Baking Bloggers Share Their Favorite Dessert Recipes
The Everygirl is an awesome local blog that features successful women who work in beauty, food, fashion and more. In the midst of sorting through the clutter of holiday cookie recipes, we loved how this feature simplified the whole process. The gingerbread cake with coffee glaze looks particularly tempting.
  3. Dorito Dusting
Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like. We just came across the idea to crush up Doritos, put them into a pepper grinder and actual season your food with them. It sounds…interesting to say the least. It is also the most unique use for a mortar and pestle we’ve ever seen. It kind of sounds like a genius way to use the ingredient if it were in your basket on an episode of Chopped. In real life? Not so much.
  4. Sweet Potato Samosas
We’re getting a little sick of all the pumpkin pies and leftover turkey recipes we’ve been seeing. Ethnic food is where it’s at – and what’s better than a seasonal sweet potato samosa? I’m not sure because I’ve never had one myself, but I intend to very soon. These perfectly savory snacks look perfect for a holiday party or really any occasion. I’m all for the cilantro mint chutney, too.
  5. The Menu at Waffles
No one is more excited about the new Waffles location than Chicago Foodies. According to Eater Chicago, the 3617 N. Broadway location will finally be open by Wednesday. We’re hoping the South Loop menu favorites make it to the new spot. We’ve been drooling over the liege waffle, red velvet, cheddar and short rib…the list could go on.
