Growing Power Market Baskets

August 02 2012 - 12:00 PM

Interested in community supported agriculture but don’t have the money or time to commit to a season-long subscription? I have always always wanted to support the various farm-to-table CSA programs in the area, but knew I couldn’t commit to weekly pick-ups and the amount of food would have been overwhelming for a single person household. Happily, I have since discovered the Growing Power Market Basket program. The program does not require a season-long commitment; you simply place your order by email or phone a week before you’d like a basket.

For $17, you will receive a regular market basket, consisting of 20-25 lbs of conventionally grown and organic fruits and vegetables. I chose to order a junior/senior market basket for $9, which is half the size of the regular market basket. If you’d prefer to purchase entirely organic produce, the sustainable market basket is available for $28 and is the same size as the regular market basket. They also offer a fruit basket for $17.
Fresh produce at an affordable price while supporting one of the nation’s best urban farms? It’s too good to be true! The only downside is you will spend a lot more time washing dirt off your produce compared to store-bought goods. In the interest of using up your groceries before they spoil, you may also find yourself considering such avant-garde flavor combinations as brussels sprouts with orange-jalapeno chutney, but that is a small price to pay.
