The Shanty – Worth a Visit on Your Weekend Trip to WI

June 07 2012 - 3:20 PM

As you head north on Highway 41 ready for your weekend getaway in Wisconsin, why not stop for a bite to eat. Conveniently located near Great America and the outlets in Gurnee, The Shanty (38995 N US Hwy 41, Wadsworth) looks like a local dive from the outside. The inside is cozy and quaint, country kitsch at its best. One wouldn’t be expecting much in terms of service or the quality food but you’ll be impressed with both!

The servers are genial; they’re as nice to their regulars as they are to the folks driving by who’ve heard about The Shanty from “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives”. Tables are decorated with the old-school cracker baskets complete with butter, because hey, really who doesn’t want to butter their crackers? The menu is extensive serving breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, pasta, greens and salads.

The side salad is a bountiful bed of mixed greens – something totally unexpected at a side of the road sort of joint. The burgers are juicy and so are the house smoked pulled pork sandwiches from the Shanty’s next door neighbor Porky’s. If you’re opting for something a bit higher end there is an extensive seafood selection from the Poor Man’s Lobster (Icelandic cod) to the Food Network featured Tequila and Orange Grilled Salmon. Definitely order the local fish fry as this is almost Wisconsin territory after all. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with the portion size and quality of the fish.

There’s plenty of parking in front of The Shanty, and you won’t feel like you had to drive a million miles out of your way to enjoy some good grub on your way to enjoying the summer sun Wisconsin-style.
