Welcome to Our Sponsor– Harvest Moon Farms

Harvestmoon This is a long overdue. We'd like to welcome Chicago Foodies' first CSA partner– Harvest Moon Farms. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a great way to eat healthy, sustainable, small and local. Harvest Moon is a 30-acre, sustainable farm in Viroqua, Southwestern Wisconsin, growing over 50 kinds of vegetables.

Knowing your farmer is a truly nice thing and you can get to know Bob and Jennifer Borchardt. They purchased fallow land and changed their vocation. From a background in video production and academic text book publishing respectively to becoming farmers is quite a transition.  They started the farm in 2007 and have created something very tangible. It's a remarkable story.

In addition they partner with other local growers and purveyors to provide any city dwelling Chicagoan a spectrum of local fresh food, from meat to eggs to cheese. On the farm they also have a full commercial kitchen.

Here is a random example of what to expect in a given week: Strawberries, Kale, Swiss Chard, Garlic Scapes, Mint, New Potatoes, Kohlrabi, Scallions, Tomatoes and Pea Shoots.

A nice thing about CSAs is trying new things; I've never used garlic scapes. For families, CSAs are especailly nice but when you travel often, or don't cook as much as you should, they may not be for everyone. They have 11 pick up areas in the city, 4 downtown and in the loop.

There is a video on their site that sums them up really well. Check it out.
