Smuttynose Robust Porter

I was browsing around Pastoral Artisan Cellars’ North Broadway location, and I remembered some earlier postings in Chicago Foodies regarding the arrival of Smuttynose, so when I saw some Robust Porter I couldn’t resist the urge to try. It had a rich, espresso-foam colored head and a dense, dark body that almost cannot be penetrated by light. One of the first things I noticed about it was that it wasn’t cloyingly sweet, a fad that seemed to be common in the 1990s at the dawn of micro brew popularity.   It also had a nice roasted malt, coffee, and bittersweet chocolate mid-palate with notes of, with a chickory finish and a hint of refreshing acidity to balance the bold flavors. Smuttynose Porter goes for, if memory serves, $10.99 a four-pack at Pastoral.
