The Salon Series with Keer Tanchak - Bluebird Chicago

September 27 2010 - 9:20 PM

What is it that has the ability to bring together artists, foodies and winos? Is it the similarity of attention to detail that goes into paintings, meals and tastings? Is it the presence of passion that each guru puts into his or her craft? Or is it just the general search for a good time and great conversation?

Whatever the case may be, The Salon Series nailed it. Artist John Coyle Steinbrunner and owner of The Bluebird in Wicker Park, Tom MacDonald, created The Salon Series as an evening to bring people together in a relaxed, unintimidating setting to talk art, food and wine. Chicago Foodies had the chance to again attend for an evening that included a three-course, passed dinner with wine pairings followed by a forum led by Keer Tanchak, the featured artist of the evening (new artist each time) and moderated by Steinbrunner.

As I never turn down a meal with wine pairings, especially at Bluebird, I put my “I’m not very well versed in the world of art” insecurities aside and hopped on the artistic bandwagon for the day – and was not disappointed. The evening is so relaxed that even beginners such as myself felt comfortable asking anything and everything one would ever want to know about the artist. The meal started out with two flatbreads, one with lamb sausage and the other all veggie, paired with North Coast 'Le Merle' farmhouse ale (which, by the way, is amazing). The second was salmon over a mushroom sauce paired with a chenin blanc, followed by pork cheek (yep…) paired with a gamay red. And for dessert, three servings of the best waffles in Chicago (as always, I’m open for suggestions): one served with peaches, one with banana and the third with melted dark Belgian chocolate with whipped cream. Perfect ending, to a fantastic evening.
