A few weeks ago in a Friday afternoon tasting of several wines at Lush Wine & Spirits, I had a unique, refined yet full-bodied Italian red wine called Pala Triente Cannonau di Sardegna (Sardinia). Cannonau was the grape varietal used in 95 percent of the blend, with the remaining five being mixing grapes. This is the first time in memory that I had a wine from Sardinia, as there are so many different wine regions throughout Italy.
This 2005 vintage had a heavier body, with plums and currants, and a hint of spice. Its balance made it food friendly, and while it had legendary acidity in Italian reds it also had good tannic support to carry the wine, and the flavors were concentrated and prolonged. At $23 I found this to be a great deal, given that its itensity is found in much more expensive wines.

Cannonau is the local name for another well-known grape, "grenache". This wine, from my recent experience, is peaking and quickly on its way down. Drink quickly! But I agree, great value!
