Since 90% of my office right now is on some form of diet we have been searching the loop at lunchtime for the perfect salad fix. Of course not all salads can really be called diet, or even healthy for that matter but there is something about going out for a salad that just makes you feel better than going out for a burger.
In the search for the perfect salad we’ve certainly come across some really bad ones. The Gage comes to mind were I had a $15 dollar bowl of iceberg lettuce with some dry Tamarind chicken, Calamata olives and goat’s cheese thrown in. The combination didn’t work and the iceberg lettuce didn’t justify the price.
Conversely I’ve had some great salad combinations and all of them can be found at Macy’s at the 7th floor food court. For $8.95 these salads have gourmet ingredients, prepared fresh and are enormous portions. Although you order cafeteria style, everything is prepared on real plates (not in a plastic bowls like at Cosi) and they do have servers that come around to refill your drink or pack up your uneaten portions to go.
One of my favorites, which is a pretty classic combination, is the warm, fried goat’s cheese salad with strawberries, apples, walnuts and balsamic. You can add on a tender grilled chicken breast for a few extra bucks. The steak salad is substantial with a healthy portion of medium cooked steak, red-pepper vinaigrette, Gorgonzola cheese, shoe-string potatoes and horseradish cream. I’ve also tried the Southwestern Caesar, tossed in a spicy Caesar dressing with Poblano peppers, garlic croutons, grilled chicken breast and Parmesan cheese. There is also the grilled chicken and Quinoa salad with candied walnuts and a berry glaze. All are served with a pretzel roll. They sound simple, and they are, but they are prepared perfectly and for the price I’d say some of the best salads around.

I visited Chicago 2 weeks ago and had lunch several times at the 7th floor salads location. I have fallen in love with those pretzel rolls!! Do you have any idea how to get that recipe??
Thanks
Heather
