You've got to be kidding me! It reminds me of the best line in the John Candy movie, "Who's Harry Crumb" when Candy cavalierly tells a bartender, "I'll have what he's having." and the bartender walks away saying, "One brandy and clamato coming up..." It's a hoot but I digress.
Every summer new flavors come out. Here we've covered Leinie's Summer Shandy and the Bacardi Mojito in the past few weeks. I was itching to do a 40 oz. Faceoff but that's this weekend.
While looking at the varieties of 40's I was struck dumb by this can. It's like Bud's answer to the Chelada Chill from Miller... but it's gross. Actually I shouldn't say that as I didn't even try it.
Editor's Note: I'm not going to.

I saw this at the grocery store the other day. I was curious but it looks horrible.

Beer and tomato juice are actually not that uncommon a combination. At least in Nebraska. My brother-in-law and his whole family only drink beer with tomato juice, so I would have to imagine they would be even more thrilled with something like this.
They say it is like a mild Bloody Mary.
Personally, I like my bloody mary's spicy or my tomato juice straight. :)

I know Red Beer well from a visit to relatives in Nebraska... I posted about it in November of 2005! I rather enjoy Red Beers but it's not CLAM juice! That's too crazy.

I wouldn't try it either - beer and Clamato is just wrong.
I think what the brewers are shooting for, utterly without success, is a michelada, which does have limes in it, but no clams or clam juice whatever, at least in my experience.
You can make your own easily using whatever beer you like(Negra Modelo is best) and lime juice, with a little worcestershire, soy, hot pepper sauce, tomato juice (if you like), all over ice. Using kosher salt and pepper on the rim of the glass is good, as well.

This is just Bud's answer to Miller's Chill. Actually this kind of combination, Beer + Clamato is very popular in some latin american countries. They add Clamato, lime juice, salt, and hot sauce to their beers. Nothing personal guys but Bud and Miller are focusing on the hispanic population. I haven't tried it yet but I am looking forward to do it. I'll come back later to let you know if it is good or definitely I have to stick to my recipe. Thanks

Bud and Clamato is a common drink among Hispanics in California. Farmworkers commonly drink it for breakfast. It is quite good, with Tapatio Hot Sauce!

This beer would sell large in Canada... It looks YUMMY!!

A friend of mind came over just yesterday and she showed it to me. I'm not a budwiser fan and I had no idea about Clamato. I thought it was just tomato juice. I tried it for the first time and was blown away at the taste. This drink has great flavor down to the drop and it never looses it's carbonation. If you have not tried it yet buy one taste it and then leave a comment. It's really tasty but be careful because of the taste you will forget this does have alcohol in it and next thing you know...your done....Be safe...

Actually beer and clamato is not new.
I myself love it and drink it often.
This product is OK.. if you like this sort of mix. Its just in too big a can and has bud light, which is horrid beer.
I actually mix 2-3 oz of clamato with 12 oz of coors light, or occasionaly a dark lager like harp.
Really quite good if you are into tomato beverages!

Taste one if you like tomato's and beer. If your old enough? You would know that tomato juice and beer, is the original BLOODY MARY. In Texas
it was called RED EYE. I drank one of the new clamato's at a resturant last night, and it brought back memories. Hope you can buy it in stores soon.

Tried this beer at a USC-Nebraska tailgate party. I am a red beer drinker, and this was very good. Great flavor and do not have to go to the trouble to mix anything. Highly recommend it.

First impression: disgusting.
After eating a little spicy food i tried another sip and it wasn't that bad. I was eating pinto beans with corn, salsa, olives, and a tiny bit of cheese.
I really wouldn't want to drink a lot of this.. maybe 12oz with a good mexican meal.

salted sturgeon eggs, fungi that needs to be found by pigs rooting throughh the ground, fried livers of over-fed geese, whole bodies of bisected bivalves consumed with coctail sauce and lemon, raw fish, ground meat and spices stuffed into animal intestines, cabbage and spices placed into jars and fermented underground, moldy cheese from caves in France, old milk with bacteria growing in it (danon strawberry banana for me!), fried pig belly, ground and processed pig...beef...chicken parts with mustard on bread (a lunchbox favorite!)...all of these sound terrible but aren't and may are the favorites of children! Taste before you comment or look beyond the thought of the food and experience a new taste for a change. I tried the beer and served it to my family with black beans and rice, fried sweet plantains, and mojo marinated porkloin. We all agreed that it perfectly complimented the food...and we're all gringos from Ohio.

This is a great combination, I first drank beer and clamato juice in the 115th Ord. Det. in Germany in the mid 60s. I was surprised to see it packaged by Bud
Posted by: Bob | November 13, 2007 at 06:24 PM
I had one of these at the Semi-Final MLS game, Houston Dynamo vs Kansas City Wizards. ....uugh. It has the worst after taste I've ever experienced. I'm all about trying new things, thus forced myself to drink the entire can. I'm tempted to mix one up myself, but this pre-packaged deal from Bud is just not to my standards... I'd rather drink piss with clam guts and tomato juice and mustard.

i have been drinking budweiser ans clamato for nearly 20 years, now it looks like somebody beat me to it. i will be obtaining a couple of cans in the very near future.

I recently tried this drink for the first time this week and I absolutely love it!! I tried both bud's version of chelado as well as a 'home made' version using Modelo especial beer, 4 oz. spicy clamato juice, tabasco, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, quarter of a lemon or lime, whichever you prefer and a dash of salt. I would have to say the bud version was 'ok', but I like things more spicy and preferred the homemade version.
I would have to say if you like bloody mary's then you should like this drink....but like the other comments, don't discount it till you try it. YUMMY!!
Canada has made this drink famous as well and call it a Caesar.

I just bought a case of this stuff….. Absolutely disgusting!!!! I should have known as it was only eight dollars for said case. I am a huge fan of Tomato juice and what Communist doesn’t like a cold draft; but together it’s nothing short of gross. One of the former posts alluded to the affinity for which Hispanics had for this crap. Noted, I will give it away next time I see any. Who puts hot sauce in beer?
Posted by: DGG | November 29, 2007 at 07:27 PM
HMMM. I have a new drink that I tried tonight based on the Budweiser Chelada. I call it a B-8. I used about 4 oz of V-8 and 12 OZ of Stroh's, with some Lousiana Hot Sauce and a little bit of lemon juice. It was WONDERFUL iafter it stopped fizzing all over the counter (the Stroh's was at room temp) and I think I have drank at least four of them so far.

An after hangover special among my help (Miller and tomato juice) sounded gross, smelled worse gave me a hangover w/o even drinking the stuff. But I have to say any pale ale or a Negra Modelo with Clamato in a frosted glass rimmed with "Twang" chili/lime salt or their celery salt or almost any of their salts is awfully tasty. Twang.com put a sample of their salts on Clamato jugs a few years back as a promo and I got hooked. Keep your eye out for these salts. YUM

This is a great treat. I drank it first in Denver CO a couple months ago. I was so happy to see it sold in my town in WA. I am drinking one right now, yummy!

I tried it. It is very yummy!

I have been drinking Yuengling and V-8 since I went to Kansas City last November... my uncle got me hooked on the stuff. Tried the Budweiser and Clamato last night and it didn't disappoint me.

Beer and Clamato rocks! I will only drink beer when mixed with Clamato now. I just got back from Mexico and they had a clamato bloody mary the was awesome. with clams in the glass too. Very yummy and I will be having them again this weekend. So for all of you who thinks this is gross, well that just means more for me :)

A couple months ago my friend and I tried some salsa that his mom had in the refrigerator, and it was really weird. Turned out it was really old and had gone bad.
This drink tastes EXACTLY like that.. And really, it's GREAT as a salsa or as an ingrediant for Mexican food since the combo of beer and clamato is such a weird nice texture..
But I don't think I'll buy it to get drunk.

In the Canadian west, especially Alberta, beer and tomato juice is known as a "Red Eye". We, no doubt got the name from the Texans who came up here in the mid forties and fifties to develop our oil industry. My wife and I make a drink of beer and Clamato juice and we call it a "Clam's Eye". It's very good in the summer served in large frosted beer mugs.

This is all I drink at home. I grew up in Nebraska and tomato beers were the norm. It's very good and it makes the beers go down real fast. If you haven't tried one or even have the guts to try one, then stop knocking it.

Hey all ya this isn't uncommon were i'm from ( North Dakota ) i've seen people drinking tomato and beer sense i was little, i have to admit tho that this attempt from bud. is a good idea but they failed, its extremely to salty i don't know why they would add so much i love allittle salt in my drink but this is just way over the top allmost like drinking salt water will make you gag... if they would cut down on the ammount of salt i think this would be a huge hit otherwise don't waste your time

i just bought my first, of the above mentioned product although I have not opened it yet...this is a real taste test from an honest to god red blooded american male, age 25. i drink about 100 beers a week so I think i can test this beyond even budweisers expectations here we go....it seems less carbonated than regular beer, ok first impression..it tastes like a flat beer with some spices from your cabinet in it...second sip...sweeter than i expected, still tastes flat but not as bad as the first sip, third sip...who gives a f&^k its beer

Beer & Clamato has been around forever, we Cannucks have been drinking it for years. It's just another version of a Red Eye which is beer, tomota juice, raw egg. The real name for the drink however is not a chelada, its a BEER + CLAMato = Bearded Clam!!

I picked up a couple of cans of this earlier this week out of morbid curiosity, as while I've been a longtime red beer enthusiast, I've always found the taste of Clamato as a cocktail mixer repulsive. However, I was very pleasantly surprised--the tastes of the beer and lime suppress the clam taste enough that instead of tasting briny like a Clamato and vodka, the combination tastes more like a (very) mild and savory bloody beer. I'll be enjoying more.

Well, It does sound wrong. To many it is just that. Wrong. Morbid curiosity ? perhaps. Damn, I hate to say it , and I dont drink Bud. But, I liked it. Alot. I hate to say it. I am a classic trained Chef In San Francisco, and own three very well known establishments. I have trained under some of the best. I dont know what happened to me but this stuff was tasty, in a trashy, sorta.. tangy.. by the trailer kinda way. It could be paired with some yummy treats.
Perhaps during a 'Cheleda' Induced clamory.. I'll come up with something. Others in my profession after seeing through the clammer and stigma actually agree. We could have fun with this.
So.. in your travels , don't be so repelled when you travel to SF and find a 'Roasted Poblano and Dungeness Crab coquette with spicy endive and Cheleda reduction. You just might pass on that $140 bottle of Caymus your friends told you about, and take the Cheleda celery, and jalepeno Martini. 'Spam' didnt achieve greatness by accident. keep the open mind. Although 'Spam' has its place.
Cheers all

I live in Buffalo, NY. For the last 15 years, me and my idiot friends have a "Bad Beer" party. Everyone must bring a 6-pack of beer that costs less than $3.00. We give awards for the best bad beer, cheapest beer, and worst beer.
I found the Bud with Clamato by accident at a local convenience store and thought "this will make me a winner".
Nobody at the party had ever heard of it. I ended up splitting it with another gentleman. I would describe its taste as eating tomato soup, vomitting it, then drinking the recycled soup. Needless to say, I wasn't a fan.
I told this story to quite a few people from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Nobody had any idea such a drink existed. I was recently in Houston and noticed that it was pretty prevalant there.
Thank you for the education about this apparently fine libation. I guess my pallette is not refined enough for such a dignified taste.

I tried budweiser & clamato for the first time tonight, it is actually quite delicious in my opinion. If you like beer and spicy tomato juice then this is the drink for you! I am a fan of bloody marys (vodka & tomato juice..etc etc) so this was a bit of a change to try it with beer but hey, its good. Don't knock it till you try it :)
