According to Wikipedia, a “pierogi” is a Slavic dumpling, either boiled or fried, stuffed with various goodies, originally from Poland. The “Pierogi Factory” is a small, casual dining restaurant in Lincoln Park that dishes out these sumptuous treats. I had the chance to try out both the restaurant and their titular dish last night, and enjoyed both.
Just two blocks away from the Belmont Red Line stop, the
restaurant is a small restaurant with a big sign you can’t miss. The interior
isn’t too fancy, but it’s a comfortable, family friendly place. I did have a
little language barrier issue about whether my order was for dining in or to
go, but the staff was all very friendly about it and I certainly didn’t mind.
Choosing from over a dozen different kinds of dumplings (ranging from potato and chedder to plum) I settled with the fried mushroom and sauerkraut pierogies (I have a weakness for sauerkraut) and a bowl of Borscht soup. It was all very rich and savory, with plenty of apple sauce, sour cream and bread available to help cut its intensity.
The prices are pretty reasonable for the quality. The pierogies
all go for $4.99 for 6 pieces and $7.99 for 12 pieces. They also have lots of
side dishes. The bowl of Borscht I got was only $1.99, and it was really filling.
They also usually have daily specials that are pretty good deals.
One warning though, their bottled water is actually European mineral water, which is not for everyone! They’ve got soda and some cool fruit juices, though. Check it out.
