Another chance to get in on one of this year's benefit dinners. They have all been great and this event at MK seems like it will stay the course. Having an opulent dinner on "National Hunger Awareness Day" seems wrong but it's for charity and if it makes you think it's doing what it should.
This Wednesday June 6th MK and Epicurious.com are co-hosting a benefit dinner to raise money for America's Second Harvest and the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Blue Water Grill and Nine Steakhouse are also contributing.

It sounds too good to be true. Those fabulous sauces whipped up in the old microwave without all of the traditional – fat and time consuming, (and kitchen infusing) methods? Can't be.
Julie Sahni has figured on the adjustable power of the microwave and a variety of glass cookware to cover off on different cooking techniques but it seems that I was operating at 100% in covered glass pots almost entirely. I bailed on a microwavable browning pan since I don't have one and don't know if they even make them anymore. The cookbook is from 1990. She also published Classic Indian Cooking in 1980 and Classic Indian Vegetarian and Grain Cooking in 1985.
Some interesting additions in the back include mung broth and how to make ghee... basically clarify the butter and then keep it going for about 5 minutes, until all the water fizzles out and the butter darkens. Without getting too carried away I wanted to see how easy these dishes are. I gave it a shot with a mulligatawny, chicken makhani and a gobi vindaloo. The combined prep time of 20 minutes sounded too good to be true and I have the advantage of getting some of the tough to find ingredients at the local Devon groceries so finding asafetida is easy for me. I have to give this a shot.

The waitress reminds us that the brisket was mentioned on "Check Please." There's a fan-base for their 4-cheese macaroni. Fat Willy's is a go-to place for lots of folks. I should have written this before going to Texas but it might make a bolder statement now that I've been to a couple Lone Star eateries. The brisket is really good.
I had to order two sandwich plates. A big problem is that you can't get a meat assortment. I've heard that they serve a mean bird but I didn't want to toss all the extra bread, fries, cole slaw, etc. To order just the meat you have to order a huge portion – it's crazy.

I've been travelling and a wonderful thing about the web is that you can post from anywhere. The downside is that if you're posting, you're not doing something else. Considering it was my first visit to Paris and I was running around I am asking for a pass... I'll get to the wonderful places with pictures but there is a more pressing summer issue. B-B-Q.
Smoque has been getting lots of attention for a long time as being some great BBQ. Given my obsessive relationship with brisket I was a little embarassed to admit that I've never had smoked brisket.

I'm wading through a jet-lagged Sunday. I woke up at 8am and went to the grocery store and ordered a Café Americano. I just got back from Europe where you pretty much cannot get drip coffee so I made do with espresso shots and hot water. It pretty much makes the equivalent amount of drip but tastes different.
After several days with fairly diluted espresso in London I was switched to about half as much hot water in Paris where coffee-to-go doesn't really happen. They give you a plastic cup that feels like it's melting and look at you funny. The stronger coffee grew on me.
