Torajiro on Diversey - for sushi (or Sabri, depends on the weather).

Frontera Grill... Mexican food always puts me in a good mood.

West Town Tavern hands down. Wonderful unfussy food prepared with high quality ingredients and skill, plus a well chosen, quirky wine list, handsome decor and prices that are incredibly reasonable make WTT tough to beat!

Avec...just love sitting at the bar eating a series of small plates, always beginning with the bacon-wrapped dates

Depends on what I'm looking for:
Pizza - Frasca
BBQ - Smoque
Celebrations - Gale Street Inn
Bar Food - 4 Moons
Breakfast - The Burgundy
Is that too much?

Fonda Del Mar, 3749 W. Fullerton Ave
My boyfriend and I met Chef Raul when he taught a cooking class at the Treasure Island on Clybourn (another of my favorite "foodie" things to do) and we loved him and the food he prepared. it was like discovering an entirely new palate in my same old mouth.
when we finally made it to the restaurant and chose the chef's tasting menu, we were overwhelmed with the quality and service. the friends we have taken since then have also become big fans.
the menu changes regularly, but if you can you definitely must try any variety of stuffed poblanos they're offering, anything served with their creamy poblano sauce, passionfruit margaritas, and you seriously have to have the pineapple upside-down cake (i know it sounds a bit pedestrian but it is the most buttery, moist, pineapple-saturated, spice cake creation ever!)
by the way it is no longer BYOB

Short list:
Frontera Grill and Mayan Palace for two different kinds of Mexican
Pizza DOC for Roman pizza
Fogo de Chao when I want meat
Greek Islands for Greek/Med.
and in a pinch, because it's right down the street, RJ Grunts.

I have a lot of favorite places. If you haven't tried it, I strongly recommend the 6 course tasting meal (with wine of course) at Bank Lane Bistro in Lake Forest. Always something surprising - Chocolate molten cake & Fois gras for desert for ex.- and the place is fairly casual & friendly.

Bank Lane Bistro is tops, as is the South Gate Cafe (which I believe shares a kitchen).
545 North, which is located at 545 North Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville, opened over the summer and everything I've had there has been perfect. The dishes are always delicious, with a familiar feeling, but there is usually some slight culinary tweak which sets them apart from the usual restaurant fare.
Bottaio is just north on Milwaukee, for incredible Italian.
Obviously, I live north of the city.

I tend to leean toward Italian, but the short list inclues: South Gate in LF, Prairie Moon in Evanston, Flight in Glenview, Mia Francesca (various), LaDonna on the north side, and either Norton's or Michael's in Highland Park for a good burger and not-soggy fries (Norton's edge is that it has a bar and the nicest bartenders around).

Shanghai Terrace, One Sixty Blue, Coco Pazzo, Le Lan, Sola,
Arun's, Tru. And there are many, many more I have not listed!!

I love The Hopleaf in Andersonville. Great atmosphere, great Belgian beer selection, and where else can you get organic steak frites?
Love Avec & Lula Cafe, too. Sushi Wabi & de cero. MK for a special night.

Jerry's Sandwiches: I eat here more than any other restaurant-not only because it is 1 block from my office, but because every variety of sandwich, from peanut butter and chicken with apples to turkey with feta and chutney is a delicious celebration of cold picnic sandwiches with yummy soups to boot. The gazpacho at Twisted Spoke edges Jerry's though.

Faves - Avec, West Town Tavern, Quartino, Green Zebra
Recent disappointment - Saltus - it's unfortunately one of those restaurants we all know (and hate) that sees fit to employ servers that try as hard as they can to act more pretentious than the patrons... even/especially when the patrons aren't acting pretentious. Too bad because it's a nice space.
