Unique So Chique is a boutique and teahouse located unexpectedly in Uptown. It is a quaint pocket of serenity amongst the bustle of students from Harry Truman College across the street and busy EL traffic from the Wilson stop just blocks away.
You first enter the boutique, with women’s clothing, accessories, baby gifts, candles, cards and lotions. You’re typical Lincoln Park type boutique shop. Then you head back to the tea and room, which is small and cozy with soothing music and lighting. The cocoon-like atmosphere is probably not the best on warm, bright sunny days but in the fall and winter, it should definitely hit the spot. Although they do have a full lunch menu, I went with a friend specifically for the tea service.
They have several different options depending on how hungry you are and weather you’re in the mood for more savory than sweet. I went for the sweet service that included a selection of unusually flavorful scones, interesting ingredients like lemon rosemary and apricot orange. Gourmet truffles, biscotti and very crunchy delicious cookies completed the plate along with the traditional lemon curd and clotted cream. Everything is made fresh by Le Cordon Bleu pastry chefs. There was more than enough to take plenty of dessert home.
My companion ordered her service with savory finger sandwiches. In addition to the traditional cucumber sandwiches they offered a variety of more gourmet variations. The chicken salad with apricot and walnuts was my favorite and left me wanting more. For those who are just into sweets they are likely to be opening a chocolate shop near by to showcase their hand-made exotic toffee and truffle creations. But for now, you can sample these mouth-watering truffles while enjoying a serene cup of tea.
