It was a warm summer night when my party of six headed into Northbrook, destined for some big, hot, heavy bowls of pasta. Though the weather and the fare at Tonelli's seemed a mismatch, we were generally happy with our decision.
Tonelli's is an old-school family-friendly Italian place. The wine list was less than spectacular, but the menu offered something for everyone. We got the standard dinner salad (fresh, crisp lettuce is ALWAYS appreciated) and a variety of pastas (except for one woman, who got a half-chicken that fed her for days). My dish, a baked meat ravioli, was smothered in cheese and garlic (no vampires on my watch). I loved it, and the portion was just big enough to keep me satisfied without feeling that big pile of pasta sitting in my stomach all night. The Italian beef sandwich was dripping with juice (just the way I like it) and the pizza bread was good, too.
Good prices, big portions. Good for a group, but not a romantic evening. Outdoor seating looked inviting, with strings of white lights and plenty of room.
