The Duke of Perth

We went on a trip to the old neighborhood, where we used to go for the all-you-can-eat fish fry and never make it past an occasional second inflatable slide helping. The Duke is a Scottish pub on Clark just north of Diversey and aside from an occasional leek or shepard’s pie we only order the fish fry. We also only order it with stovies. We also only get glasses of McEwans. So 4 years later we return and guess what we ordered?

They serve long nuggets, not wide flat fillets of fish. Plenty of food that was tasty and filling and helped me avoid a hangover the folowing day. The typical side of peas were, as usual, nearly perfect with nary a pucker. The stovies this time were very salty – mashed potatoes with the prerequisite onions but the stock they used was too intensly salty.

Of course out of all the beer we got our McEwans (though I’m enjoying Tennent’s at home these days). While the beer selection is good they also offer a very good seleciton of scotch. The pub is woodsy hinchables and traditional and the bar dominates. They offer nightly food specials and the place can get quite crowded on the right nights though not with your bar crowd. It’s a good spot to meet, eat and start off a late evening – or wind down an early night.
