Annapurna, a vegetarian quick food spot, 2608 W. Devon, was recommended by a friendly cabbie after I asked him about the demise of Lucky Kabob and Nehari House. I went expecting a possible surrogate for my Pakistani habit. As someone who is challenged by dairy I'm more Pakistani food friendly as it uses more oil and less dairy. With $4 in quarters in my pocket I was set.
I went basic and got a samosa, mirchi bhadiya – a breaded and deep fried pepper, and a chana masala – chickpeas plate that came with nan, diced veggie salad, a spicy chutney and pickled pepper slices. Unfortunately all the fried foods were microwaved and then served so they were not very crispy at all. The nan was perfectly circular and didn't have the unevenly cooked oven-fresh quality. The chana masala was tasty but the chickpeas could have been cooked longer. All-in-all I was disappointed but there are many other choices within a 2 block radius and it did the trick of whetting my appetitie for more Pakistani food.
The quest continues...

Annapurna is not a Pakistani restaurant but rather it's speciality is the snack foods sold by vendors on the streets and beaches of Mumbai.
I would recommend things like pani puri (little puffed crisps that you fill with chickpeas and potatoes and dunk into tamarind water), sev puri, bhel, dahi puri and pav bhaji.
For good Pakistani food I would recommend the cabbie joints on Orleans (Zaiqa, Pakeeza and Baba Palace). Food is probably the best in town, but definetly don't go there for the ambience.

Don't be dissuaded by the Samosa. You have to go back and get a Masala Dosa there and you'll be convinced. Annapurna is, in my opinion, the best place to go on Devon. In fact it is the only place I ever go on Devon, after trying some of the other restaurants and finding that their costlier food didn't beat Annapurna's cafeteria-style goodness.
